IWI / HAPU AFFILIATIONS
The parents of Tamihana Te Hoia came south from Maungatautari in
the Ngāti Raukawa migrations of the early 1820s. The family moved
from Kapiti to the mainland after a few years. Tamihana Te Hoia was
born at Rangiuru, near Ōtaki Beach. He became the leading figure of
Ngāti Huia after the death of his eldest brother, Hirama Te Hoia. A
skilled orator, he was said to be a strong-willed leader. He died
in 1905. The National Art Gallery acquired the portrait from
descendents of Tamihana Te Hoia in 1968.
