Opononi,
13th July 1908.
Dear Mr Partridge,
Welcome back to "God's Own Country". Since you left on your
wanderings it can scarcely be termed Gods Country now. At one time
strikes were few and far between. They seem now to have come to
stay with us.
Can you find time to come over to Hokianga before the American
fleet arrives. I will show you what I have got but very few photos.
A portrait of Tamate Maka in a frame and one of Manning when he
arrived first in the country and his rifle he fought Heke with. A
lump of greenstone sent by Te Rauparaha to Rangatira Moetara which
was dug up in a gumfield where it had been deposited during a
tribal disturbance, now in my possession. I have also paintings of
a cruise I made in the Pacific Islands over fifty years ago and
curios in variety.
I have lots of letters to write now. Try to come over, will be
glad to see you. I have just celebrated my 90th birthday.
Yours most sincerely.
John Webster
