Ngāti Maru

Iwi map - Pare WateneIWI / HAPU AFFILIATIONS

Little is known of Pare Watene who is also known as Pare Watana.1 According to James Cowan, her father was Hemi Watene of Ngati Maru.

Lindauer's 1878 portrait of Pare Watene is a good likeness of the Foy Brothers photograph taken in Thames between 1871 and 1878. The name Whakaarorangi is inscribed on the back of the photograph and this was her married name.

Lindauer was not the only artist to paint a portrait of Pare.  J. Gant had a number of portraits of Maori available for sale in 1888 in Wellington. His portrait of Pare went to auction with the title Pari Whakaarorangi a Waikato Chieftaness alongside a portrait of King Tawhiao.2

We have three paintings in an estate collection from Peter Webb Galleries Ltd - auctioneers and appraisers, Auckland. These have the following reference numbers: 6504/21 PRXX; 6504/31 PRX- ; and the third one has the sticker damaged and can't be read. The portraits are of Kawene Te Haho; Te Hira Te Kawau and Pare Watene. They are painted on Rangiora leaves and when purchased we were told that they were by Lindauer. Can you please advise of any information you can share that would help us with the value of these or the authenticity of these. Thank you for your help in this matter.

There's little doubt the Ngati Maru woman painted by Lindauer from the Foy photograph was indeed Pare Watana, and that along the way the spelling of her surname was corrupted. Pare Watana was the eldest of the three aughters of Watana (father) and Haeriti (mother). Her younger sisters were Mere and Te Arani. The sisters were born and grew to adolescence on Watana whanau land near Manaia Harbour on the north-west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. The family later lived, also on family land at Tararu, just north of Thames. A korowai that belonged to her younger sister Te Arani, together with a pui pui and head band are on permanent display at the Waikato University library.A family named Watene, also Ngati Maru, were centred on Kopu, close to Thames. Pare Watana's whakapapa was established by the Maori Land Court in 1973 in hearings concerning land at Tararu. WU has a copy.
