Whakarewarewa,
Feb 2nd, 1898
H.E. Partridge Esq.
Dear Sir,
A great deal of pleasure was afforded me by seeing your
interesting collection of Maori portraits, especially as I
instantly recognised some of my old friends long since dead. Your
collection is unique, being the only one of its kind in the colony,
and may be looked upon as an additional chapter to our present
records of the Maori "as he was". I would also mention that the
artist has displayed very great skill in depicting the peculiar,
but indescribable, mien of semi sadness so typical of the Maori
face.
I remain,
Faithfully yours,
Charles E. Nelson
