Tomika Te Mutu.
A chief of rank of the Ngaiterangi tribe of Tauranga. He was a
truculent, treacherous savage, who in the wars between the Thames
and Tauranga tribes, kept himself out of the fighting, and danger
by playing fast and loose with both sides alternately. During the
European fighting at Tauranga, he pursued the same tactics as those
for which he had previously distinguished himself in Maori warfare.
He had a sullen morose appearance which was increased by the
darkness and close tatooing of his face.
James Mackay
Late Civil Commissioner N.Z.
