30th July 1901
I belong to the Te Atiawa and Ngatitoa tribes. Some of these
"kaumatua" (old people) I saw personally, but the great majority
I've only heard by repute. And it is through the foresight and
great knowledge of "our" pakeha friend that we now behold the
likenesses of some of the "great totara" trees of Aotearoa (New
Zealand) who lived some years ago and some of whom are still
living.
I do, indeed, highly praise these pictures and also the efforts of
our pakeha friend.
May you live long.
